Workshop Programme 25-26 May 2020
For the first time the e-IRG Workshop has been organised as a series of three webinars organised within the framework of Croatia's Presidency of the Council of the European Union by the e-IRG Secretariat and the University of Zagreb, the University Computing Centre (SRCE) with the support of the Ministry of Science and Education. Initially planned as a physical meeting the workshop will now be organised as a series of three webinar, which will be held on same days as originally planned.
Each webinar addressed one of the three top challenges for the further development of e-Infrastructures in the European Research Area and beyond: development of adequate skills, the partnerships between related stakeholders within and across national boundaries, and the sharing of data under the FAIR principles, within and across scientific domains, institutions and countries.
These three key challenges should have been addressed in order to advance and implement a fully-functioning European Research Area, being inclusive, collaborative, seamlessly connected and open. The e-Infrastructure Commons comprises high-performance and high-throughput computing, leading-edge data and software, high-speed connectivity networks and related services. These, federated via the European Open Science Cloud and EuroHPC, are key components of the European Research Area and have a clear policy perspective.
The e-IRG workshops attract policy makers and funders, the e-Infrastructure providers and researchers on both the national and the European level and provide a platform for information exchange and networking of participants.

14:00Webinar I: Future skills in the new European Research Area
Session chair: Ignacio Blanquer, Spain e-IRG delegate
This session addresses the future skills in the new ERA landscape , which are required to produce, circulate and use research-based knowledge. They are critical for the improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall European research and have an impact on educational ecosystems to overall market and societal benefits. The session addresses the context of skills development in the changing European e-Infrastructure landscape and its effects on national and regional employment contexts. This session will try to answer questions like: What are the required future skills in Digital Europe? And what is needed in terms of new skills so that the added value of open data and data sharing can be exploited? What kind of skills development is needed? What changes have had a big impact on the development of learning and teaching in the past and which are to be expected in the future? What is it needed to keep higher education relevant, valuable and inclusive, in particular for higher education, research and innovation?

10:00Webinar II: Empowering the e-Infrastructure partnerships in ERA
Session chair: Matthew Dovey, JISC
Partnerships are getting into the focus of attention in Europe as a means for funding, coordination and sustainability of pan-European projects and initiatives and distribute the inherent risk of these undertakings. This session aims to address the practical benefits of joint activities in a federated environment like the European Research Area. A dedicated focus of the session is on partnerships in the European e-Infrastructure area and in particular for the envisaged EOSC partnership. "These partnerships were originally designed and have been further developed to overcome the fragmentation in the Research & Innovation landscape, to avoid duplication of efforts, to address economic crisis, competitiveness and innovation." [http://era-learn.eu] This session will try to answer questions like: What do we want to achieve with the EU partnerships? And what are the main issues from MS/AC perspectives and EC? E.g. Governance, funding, voting. Or others stakeholders' perspectives? What is the current state of EuroHPC and EOSC and how is their cooperation foreseen?

14:00Webinar III: Making the data and services FAIR
Session chair: Paolo Budroni
The implementation of the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles are core of the European Open Science Cloud to provide an infrastructure to facilitate Open Science for all researchers in Europe. With the implementation of the FAIR principles Europe has the chance to further their uptake and provide an example for a paradigm change to science. The current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the importance of interoperability between data-holders, and the relevance of accessing data in order to share knowledge without constraints to users/researchers/providers of data and an open and free approach of science. This session will try to answer questions like: How to bring FAIR forward, including the cultural aspect? What role do national public funding agencies play in the move towards FAIR data? How can we convince researchers to share data and implement FAIR principles?
